The Lanesboro Public Library has a Library Board which consists of 9 members and a City Council Liaison. Board members can be residents of the City of Lanesboro or rural Lanesboro. A majority, however, must be City residents. The Library Board members are appointed by the City Council with a recommendation from the Library Board.

Board members serve three year terms and are only allowed to serve three consecutive terms. From these members there is a chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary and treasurer elected within the group.
The Library Board as a whole attend regular monthly meetings, establish and review library policies, approve bills, create annual budgets with library director, and create long-range plans that are reviewed annually.

HOW THE LIBRARY BEGAN

The Lanesboro Public Library began by a group of visionary women who formed the Lanesboro Public Library Association in 1927. During this time, books were stored in two cupboards in the women’s lounge in the Old Community Hall. From there the Library went from the basement of the Old Community Hall, to the Village Hall, and then to the main floor of the present Community Center.
Originally the support to have the Lanesboro Public Library came from individual memberships and fundraisers. In May, of 1941, the Community Hall burned and all the belongings of the Library burned with it. Through various donations, however, the Library continued.

In 1986, the library became the Public Library officially, and began to be supported by the City of Lanesboro, Fillmore County, and state and federal monies received through SELCO, the regional library cooperative. Also, private donations from individuals and groups make the Library the successful asset it is today!

In 1994, the Library was moved to the lower level of the Lanesboro Community Memorial Center, which was newly renovated, and continues to be at this location to this day. (history information is from the dedication page of the Library Cookbook)
