Planning & Zoning

The Planning and Zoning Commission consists of a seven volunteers. Two of the seven volunteers are Council persons. This Commission usually, unless a schedule change is needed, meets on the 4th Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Lanesboro Community Memorial Center Chamber Room.

The City of Lanesboro implemented a Planning and Zoning Commission to handle all land use, zoning and comprehensive plan ordinances for the City of Lanesboro. The Commission job is to provide service to the residents of Lanesboro issuing zoning permits based on the Zoning Ordinance. The Zoning Ordinance was adopted in 1989 for the purpose of the following:

  1. Protecting the public health, safety, morals, comfort, convenience and general welfare.
  2. Promoting orderly development of the residential, commercial, industrial, recreational and public areas.
  3. Conserving the natural and scenic beauty and attractiveness of the city.
  4. Conserving and developing natural resources in the city.
  5. Providing for the compatibility of different land uses and the most appropriate use of land throughout the city.
  6. Minimizing environmental pollution.

Also, the Planning and Zoning must adhere to and enforce the Subdivision Ordinance that was adopted in 1989 for the purpose of the following:

  1. Encouraging well planned, efficient, and attractive subdivisions by establishing adequate standards for design and construction.
  2. Providing for the health and safety of residents by requiring the necessary services such as properly designed streets and adequate sewage and water services.
  3. Placing the cost of improvements against those benefiting from their constructions.
  4. Securing the rights of the public with respect to the public lands and waters.

Land Use and Zoning occupy much of the time of the Planning and Zoning Commission. Currently, they are reviewing an updated Zoning Ordinance which will hopefully be adopted in the near future.
The Comprehensive Planning process will be overviewed by the Planning and Zoning Commission, but the P&Z has directed the EDA and a contracted person, Carla Noack to work with the organization and footwork necessary to implement a completed Comprehensive Plan.
